Celebrating Women in Science

To celebrate Women’s History Month, we are highlighting females in the field of science. From Stephanie Kwolek and her invention of super fiber to our very own Willow, we’ll follow the steps of female scientists as they pave the way for new discoveries!

How can children benefit from recognizing women’s accomplishments in science?

  • Develop an understanding of equality
  • Gain social awareness
  • Perspective taking
  • Build self confidence

Gender stereotypes are apparent even in young children’s media. A recent study found that female characters were not portrayed as often as males in the field of science. In 30 STEM focused preschool shows, 77% of the characters were depicted as male. (Aladé, Lauricella, Kumar, Wartella, 2020) It’s important for children to be exposed to authentic representations of all genders, whether through media, books, toys, or games. How can you help? Start with the woman around you! Make a list of females in your child’s life and talk about the important work they do.

Two Activities to Celebrate Women in Science with your Child:
Interview time

1. Interview a female in your life and find out how she makes the world a better place every day. Find sample questions below and check out the March Activity Pack for a superwoman art activity!

  • What kinds of things are you interested in?
  • What did you want to be when you were my age?
  • What is your job?
  • What are some of the best things about your job?
Draw + Write

2. Ask your child, “What is something you want to do when you grow up? Does anyone inspire you? How might you make the world a better place?” It may/may not be a specific profession; let your child think about the things they love to do and go from there! Draw a picture and write about it (or help write!)
